5 Wheelchair Accessible Things To Do In Weymouth, Dorset

Below I have included five wheelchair accessible things to do in Weymouth following my trip to Ellwood Cottages and going to Weymouth for several days.

1. Go on the MV Freedom, Wheelchair Accessible Boat

It was my second trip on the MV Freedom. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was an earlier start. Due to tides, we had to be on the boat ready for the bridge to open at 10am, as the bridge only opens once every two hours. We didn’t want to miss it! Normally, the boat fits under the bridge, but due to the high tide, it didn’t that day.

The boat trips vary, we had a fabulous trip to see Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove and then back to the harbour. It was a very hot day in June and it was blissful on the water. The water was so calm, like a mill pond and there was a gentle breeze which was lovely as it was such a hot day. It wasn’t cold like it often is on the sea.

I recommend trying to book several weeks in advance if possible via 07974 266867

I have written a whole blog post on the MV Freedom- Wheelchair Accessible Boat, Weymouth you may like to read.

2. Walk/Wheel along the Promenade

You can walk/wheel along the promenade for quite a distance enjoying the sea and coastal view, and up towards the amusement rides.

At the beach office there is toilets including disabled accessible and changing places toilets.

You can also walk around the shops, harbour and quay which is mainly accessible.

3. Get an Ice Cream at Rossi’s Ices

Rossi’s Ices is on the opposite side of the road to the sea on the main promenade. They make their ice cream each day and have a few different flavours each day. We had a scoop of passion fruit and a scoop of natural vanilla which was delicious! They also do teas, coffees and snacks and have some indoor seating. Well worth a visit!

4. Go on the Beach using the Beach Wheelchair

At the beach office you can hire a beach wheelchair for free. This enabled me to be wheeled along the beach, sit on the beach and access the beach. Although they are not the easier things to push. It was only the third time I have been on the beach as a wheelchair user since I was 14.

It is so good these beach wheelchairs are more widely available now as it makes activities possible that many people can do as a matter of course.

The accessible matting is appearing at more beaches and means all wheelchair users can at least get on the beach and access the top of the beach. It is great they have this at Weymouth too.

5. Visit Bennetts Water Garden

Bennetts Water garden is a lovely water garden in Chickerell, Weymouth. It has many beautiful ponds with gorgeous water lilies in an array of colours from vibrant pinks to pale yellows. There is a Monet inspired Japanese bridge providing a Monet like scene. We were also lucky to see a duck with her baby ducklings.

The water garden is only open part of the year (summer months) and on certain days. It would not be accessible if it has been wet, which it does say on its website. So, I would recommend checking the website before you go to avoid disappointment and don’t go when it has been wet.

There are parts of the water garden that are not accessible, however I got to see all of the ponds just couldn’t necessarily go around the whole of each pond. The paths are mainly grass or stoney/ rough (compact).

It was a lovely relaxing afternoon in the picturesque gardens.

There is disabled parking but the car park has gravel so depending on your wheelchair you may be better to be dropped off out the front on to the block paving.

Café Monet at Bennetts Water Garden

There is a little gift shop, toilets (including disabled toilet) and Monet Café. The Café has tasty light lunches, cakes and snacks you can enjoy. Some of the tables also have a view over the water gardens.

      Hi Elizabeth,
There is changing places toilet opposite where the beach wheelchairs are (by the beach office), so hopefully you can use this. I hope that is helpful 🙂 Hannah x
